Flat Finishers PDF Print

Hammond Machine Flat Finishing MachineryAs the name implies, Hammond Flat Finishers are designed to finish flat surfaces including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, rubber, mica, wood, carbon, and even paper.  Using abrasive belts, wheels, or brushes, the Flat Finisher will accomplish stock removal, fine finishing, deburring, and scale or oxide removal.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT  -  includes an abrasive conveyor belt; variable speed conveyor drive; steel platen; one urethane-coated upper pulley and one steel or neoprene contact roll per head; and single hold-down rolls.

PRODUCTIVITY  -  Hammond Flat Finishers can eliminate many single operations by using multi-head construction.  An example would be to have a series of abrasive heads starting with coarse andFlat Finisher from Hammond Roto-Finish ending with fine.  The parts or materials pass continuously underneath the heads reducing production time per piece.  Often the number of pieces produced per hour is limited only by the speed of loading the conveyor.

ECONOMY  -  Constant pressure and speed during use, unlike manual operations, increases the life of the abrasive belt or finishing wheel.  Also, many applications can be done wet mechanically that would require dry manually.  This keeps the finishing media clean and free-cutting for longer life.  The abrasive cost savings are in addition to the time savings.

WORK ACCURACY  -  Hammond Flat Finishers are high production surfacing machines, not precision machines such as surface grinders and not designed for use with hard grinding wheels.  Variables (e.g. the moving conveyor belt, conveyor platen, resilient contact roll and finishing media) do not allow holding of a close tolerance on production.  The typical tolerance range for this equipment is plus or minus .001" to .002".

CONVEYOR  -  The most common conveyor belts are abrasive or a rubber and fabric ply with a plain or sponge rubber cover.

An abrasive conveyor belt is usually used with an electro-magnetic platen.  The initial cost is low and, as no grinding is done with the conveyor belt, it is usually long lived.

A rubber and fabric ply conveyor belt does not produce as accurate work as an abrasive belt, but is very effective for gripping wide tolerance parts as they are slightly impressed into the belt during surfacing.  This type of belt can also be cut out in areas to accommodate protrusions on the bottom of the parts to be processed.

Sponge coverings on rubber belts are used for wide or no tolerance parts that are not uniform in thickness.  The parts depress into the sponge under the heads which compensates for the variation in thickness for this class of work.

Flat Finisher Abrasive Belt Heads are built in 6" and 12" widths.  All heads have spindles mounted on a vertical slide; have air belt tensioning; and are available for wet or dry operation.

Hammond Flat Finishig Equipment Belt HeadThe heavy duty abrasive belt head is accurate and designed for heavier grinding requirements.  It features automatic belt tracking and is available in 6" and 12" widths.  The automatic tracking keeps the belt between 1/4" limits using an air device which senses movement of the belt edges and pivots the upper pulley as required.  The urethane-coated pulley has a low crown and is dynamically balanced.  Manual tracking is also provided for original orientation of the belt.

Roto-Finish Flat Finishers - Planetary Brush Heads Planetary Brush Heads are mounted within a cast aluminum housing; three (3) brush spindles per head.  The size of the housing and individual brushes are relative to the size of the parts to be processed and conveyor width.  The planetary action is created as the housing is rotated counter-clockwise, and the (3) individual brushes are rotated (2) clockwise and (1) counter-clockwise.  The housing drive is a 1 HP, V-belt drive developing 350 rpm.  The brush drive is a 2 HP, direct drive developing 1800 rpm for each spindle.  The head support is cast iron with a dovetail slide and is manually adjustable to compensate for brush wear.

Platens on the Hammond Flat Finisher support the conveyor belt and parts to be processed under each head.  Standard steel platens are used for non-magnetic applications.

Electro-magnetic platens are used for magnetic materials and have variable control to adjust the magnetic density relative to the parts size and shape.  It is important when changing from one size part to another to provide the best control under the finishing head.  Magnetic chucks are provided with leveling screws.  The illustration shows an electro-magnetic platen below the heavy duty abrasive belt head.
