Acid Descaling Compounds to Cut Through Oxide Film A part may have been heated and developed a tough oxide film or an even tougher carbonized oxide film. In either case the compound used is: either very acidic (pH below 4.5), very alkaline (pH above 10), or very heavily chelated. It is very common to have strong chelating molecules in acid or alkaline solutions. This prolongs the activity of the solution and improves the effectiveness of the descaling operations. Roto-Finish offers many acid descaling compounds as well as pre-dip compounds. These compounds cannot be used with carbon steel media but can be used with ceramic, plastic, or stainless steel media.
